Overlook an insult: Proverbs 12:16

A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.    (Proverbs 12:16)

Many times, when people insult us, there is a lot of pain, hurt, anger and mess going on underneath the surface in that person’s life.  Often, if we can extend grace, we may just be able to salvage the relationship or avoid a big fight.  Taking every insult personally and trying to repay that person back with an even bigger insult does not honour Christ.  And it doesn’t bring people closer to us or closer to God. No one likes an insult (it hurts, sometimes badly especially when it comes from a loved one), but it happens and how we respond is what is important. We can respond as the world responses or we can act as an Christian.

The choice is up to you.

It can happen when we are out and about, those who go off to work and it can happen at home.

What can we do?

Don’t take offence — When you take offense, it builds “a fence” around your heart and blocks the power of God from freely flowing. Even if someone dishes it to you, the choice is yours whether or not to take it.

Trade places — Maybe they are dealing wiht family stress or work pressures. Try to consider their unique situation and know that the perception is not always reality.

Benefit of doubt — Show mercy by not letting the insult diminish how you feel about the person. Besides, one day we will all need someone to show us the same kindness.

Humour yourself — Laugh it off and keep it moving. This is a great way to take control of the situation and prevent yourself from harbouring bitterness and anger. Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Love Again — Press the reset button in your heart and begin again. Quickly forgive and move on. Don’t let an immature moment ruin the relationship. If the same attitude reoccurs, create some distance and love from far away.

Learn from it — be teachable, don’t become jaded in Gods work, guard your words carefully, never say anything behind someone’s back, and don’t let yourself become defences. Lots of things can be learnt from one insult!!

Whilst we don't like insults, we can use them as way of growing in Christ — unpleasant episodes aren’t nice, but turn them into a positive and grow. You can almost thank the person insulting you for giving you this opportunity (sounds strange but true) — however don’t seek out insults just for the lesson !!!

  1. True and wise when we cast ourselves upon the Lord in the offense, He helps us to see things as He does..
..... there but for the grace of God go I, ( or by the grace if God I am what I'm) is sort of sounding a little pompous, but I find it helps remind me of my humanity and the human frailties of the flesh in which we all abide.

  2. It's annoying that SO many times we don't stop long enough to put ourselves in someone else's shoes. If we did, we would have a very different reaction! Thanks for the reminder. And I love the reset button idea - brilliant!
